bazss_1.2 (2002) is a 5-channel acousmatic work created at the Hiller Computer Music Studios on the campus of SUNY at Buffalo. Parts 1 and 2 were composed within a few months of each other and I often think of them as one piece. The piece contains recordings of double bass and voice which were provided by various artists who were given the instruction to improvise around the word bass/base. Some of the samples were manipulated by means of spectral analysis, resynthesis, and filtering while others were granulate using standard time stretching techniques. All of the sounds were spatialized using the software Max/MSP. Thanks to Michael Basinski, Chris Fritton, Mark Karwan, and Leif Niklas for lending their unique talents to the piece.
