Dendrites are branches that extend outward from a nerve cell, forming part of the biological structure that controls the electrical activity of that nerve cell. This piece is part of Neurosonics, a long-term creative project that has grown out of my collaboration with a neuroscientist at the University of Chicago who studies epilepsy. Her lab puts rat brains on tiny electrode arrays, stimulates them and studies their behavior, with the goal of better understanding epilepsy in humans. Dendrites is a reserved and subtle meditation on mildly anxious sounds derived from this experiment data.

Special thanks to the SPLICE Institute, Aaron Copland House, the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts, New Music USA, and the Logan Center for the Arts at the University of Chicago for their support of the Neurosonics project.
