Short Bio
Alex Lough is a composer of electronic and electroacoustic music characterized by his use of drones, feedback, minimalism, improvisation, and chance procedures. Much of his work is inspired by his diverse education in Sacred Harp singing, North Indian Classical music, Irish traditional music, and experimental composition. He writes music for live electronics, fixed and live multimedia works, and intermedia pieces for mixed ensembles. As a result of his diverse background in education, performance, and composition his inspirations are varied and incorporate elements of folk music, experimentalism, and technology. He has performed across America and internationally as a multi-instrumentalist with the UCC Advanced Traditional Irish music ensemble, Cork Sacred Harp Singers, Wesleyan Sacred Harp singers, Toneburst Laptop and Electronic Arts Ensemble, and FLEA Ensemble. He received his B.A. in Music from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT and was awarded High Honors for his undergraduate thesis project "Reshaping Traditions," a multimedia electroacoustic work. His mentors and advisors include Neely Bruce, Paula Matthusen, Mel Mercier, and Jacob Sudol. He takes an interest in world folk music, psychoacoustics, film, visual art, and mixed media art. He is currently living in Miami, FL where he is a graduate student at Florida International University pursuing his M.M. in Music Technology.
